Oh, Mama You've Been On My Mind

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. Time and again man has erected great structures and monuments that appear to exceed the limits of the greatest minds that modern engineering has to offer. Suspension bridges, skyscrapers, subways, and tunnels, the Eiffel Tower, the Chunnel, the Sphinx, the Taj Mahal, oil rigs, high-speed railways, and planes that travel faster than the speed of sound. Often such inventions were designed to both mimic and fool Mother Nature, and as such, they were built at great peril...for it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.

And it’s probably fair to assume that most of history’s greatest creators, inventors, and super geniuses had great and wise mothers. Mothers who schooled them well past their formative years and nurtured them even in adulthood...urging them to try their best, exhorting them to never give up, and instilling in them the self-confidence required to achieve the seemingly unachievable.

That being said, your mother clearly didn’t raise you right. If she had you wouldn’t be sitting there reading this. You would do well to cultivate the garden of your mind with pursuits, diversions, tests and curiosities of a more refined and noble nature...so that you might devise a way to leave this world a better place...thus making your mama proud.

At the very least you should probably be calling your mother.

A mother is like the tether on a kite - guiding you, steering you clear of danger, anchoring you. So that should you fail to stay aloft she is there to tighten the slack...or loosen the slack as the case may be - whatever is called for to allow you to soar to even greater heights. A mother helps to ensure that a person will not drift purposelessly through life without love or direction.

The Latin word for mother is mater. And the Latin word for rule is archein. Put the two words together and you have the basis for the word matriarch. A matriarchy "is a form of society in which power is with the women and especially with the mothers of the community.” To a large degree I think it may be safe to assume that nearly all societies are a form of matriarchy. For a mother holds great influence and commands much respect in nearly every society. Woe be to the no good, low down, dirty mother fuyer who would dare hurt his mama.

Mother's Day can be traced back to the ancient Greek celebration of Rhea - the mother of the gods. The celebration was held around the time of the Vernal Equinox.

Julia Ward Howe was the first person to suggest that there should be a national holiday known as Mother's Day. The year was 1872. Julia Ward Howe was also responsible for writing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."

But, it was Ana Jarvis of Philadelphia who in 1907 started a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. In 1914 she succeeded. Her own mother's death ocurred during the second week of May...May 9, to be exact. The rest, as they say, is history.

There has never been a human being who has ever been able to fully step out of the shadow of their mother...as near as I can tell, anyhow. Those that lead you to believe otherwise are skilled in deceit.

John Lennon's mother died when he was only 17. Her name was Julia. He wrote a song about her for The Beatles White Album, which was released in 1968. It was called "Julia." He also wrote a song called "Mother" for his Plastic Ono Band album, which appeared in 1970. The song was the result of primal therapy treatments he had been undergoing at the time.

There's an old Spanish proverb that says, “An ounce of mother is worth a pound of clergy.

I think I might have to agree with that.

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life.

Abraham Lincoln said that.

A mother's love can hew time and space,
Shape them to its needs,
Traverse them both at will,
And posit itself in all our memories,

I said that.

"Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your mother’s back."

I don't know who first said that. But, I remember saying it a lot when I was young.

It's alright, Ma. It's life and life only.

Bob Dylan said that.

Bob Dylan's mother was named Beatrice, or Beatty for short. She died on January 25, 2000 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Here's a picture of Bob Dylan with his mother in 1997 at the Kennedy Awards:

And here's a poem he wrote for her when he was a boy:

"My dear mother,
I hope that you will never grow old and gray,
So that all the people in the world will say:
'Hello, young lady, Happy Mother's Day.
'"

Mother-in-laws, stepmothers, Frank Zappa and The Mothers, Mother Earth, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, soccer moms, grandmothers, single mothers, surrogate mothers, expectant mothers, working moms, hot mamas, Mother, Jugs and Speed, Big Bad Mama, Throw Momma From the Train, we're gonna turn this mother out but, don't turn your mother out, dirty mo-fos, and mothers with an attitude.

In case you haven't figured it out already, we're talking 'bout your mama...and so is Bob Dylan...so, you better run home crying to your mother...it's Theme Time Radio Hour, with your host Bob Dylan.

God! I only just noticed the photoshopping. That's blasphemous. Remember us sitting in front of the painting in the Uffizi? It's one of my favorite memories.
