The word came down from the governor uptown,
There's been an emergency declared,
Everybody stay calm we're all prepared,
There's disaster relief, Red Cross, and The National Guard,
But the damage was done,
There was nothing left unscarred,
And the newspapers, TV, and the old-timers too,
They still talk about the day,
The one that got away,
Well, she only let her out of her sight for a moment or two,
And the sheriff called the dogs out and the helicopters flew,
The neighbors threw a blanket on their flowerbed that night,
By morning there was frost with no hope in sight,
And by Thursday it was over and some people say,
Maybe she did it herself,
A lot of walking under ladders,
Black cats and rabbit's feet,
Look both ways before crossing,
Don't play in the street,
A lot of water under the bridge boys and it's moving by so fast,
Can you forgive me my darling so some day we can look back and laugh,
About the one that got away,
Well, they say the earth shook so hard that the river changed its course,
And the water all flowed backwards and in the fall the birds flew north,
The sun it rose at midnight and it was dark in the middle of the day,
If you could do it all over would you do it just the same?
And sometimes we sit in the backyard and console ourselves this way,
Just reliving it all again and yearning for,
